The 25-year-old flanker has already agreed terms on a two-year deal with the French club but was contracted to the Exiles until 2012.
Toulon announced the signing last month, revealing that the England flanker had signed a two-year deal with the club. However, London Irish boss Toby Booth responded by saying that the deal had not been finalised and pointed out that there was still one year left to run on Armitage's contract with the Exiles.
An agreement has now been reached, though, with the club announcing on their websit on Friday night: "London Irish confirmed today that it has agreed to release Steffon Armitage from his contract with immediate effect. The club wishes him all the very best for the future."
