Chabal and Jauzion out of France World Cup squad

May 11, 2011

Experienced back-rower Sebastien Chabal and centre Yannick Jauzion have been left out of France's preliminary squad for the World Cup, coach Marc Lievremont said on Wednesday.
The 33 year-old No 8 was recently suspended for a fortnight after claiming that referees in the domestic Top 14 competition are biased towards Castres and Biarritz, and was also one of the six players dropped by France coach Marc Lievremont after the embarrassing Six Nations defeat to Italy earlier this year.
Former Sale forward Chabal is expected to learn his fate over his referee remarks in the next 24 hours, but now looks set to miss out on the sport's showpiece event in New Zealand later this year.
Toulouse centre Yannick Jauzion, another dropped after the Italy upset, has also been left out.
Lievremont and his back-room staff have included three players who are currently injured, in the hope that they may have recovered in time for the tournament.
Clermont Auvergne captain Aurelien Rougerie, who suffered a serious ankle injury at the weekend and is set to be sidelined for three to four months, makes the squad of 32 as does club team-mate Thomas Domingo, who has a knee injury.
France are bidding for their first World Cup crown and are one of the first teams to name their squad. Italy unveiled a training squad on Tuesday which will be whittled down before the tournament.
Squad:
Forwards: Fabien Barcella, Julien Bonnaire, Thomas Domingo, Luc Ducalcon, Thierry Dusautoir (captain), Imanol Harinordoquy, Sylvain Marconnet, Nicolas Mas, Romain Millo-Chluski, Raphael Lakafia, Lionel Nallet, Fulgence Ouedraogo, Pascal Pape, Louis Picamoles, Julien Pierre, Jean-Baptiste Poux, William Servat, Dimitri Szarzewski.
Backs: Vincent Clerc, Patrice Estebanez, Cedric Heymans, Yoann Huget, David Marty, Maxime Medard, Maxime Mermoz, Alexis Palisson, Morgan Parra, Aurelien Rougerie, David Skrela, Damien Traille, Francois Trinh-Duc, Dimitri Yachvili.
